Our History

IBS Engineering Supplies began as a father-son team with Bill Seawright and his father Ted in 1979. The company was originally located in Charles St, Innisfail and was known as Innisfail Bearing Supplies, with Bill and Ted marketing their trade experience in bearings and seals.

In 1984, utilising Bill's experience as a fitter and turner, an engineering workshop was opened at the rear of the retail outlet.

Our first product was designed and manufactured, the Supreme Fruit Picker, in 1988. This product won Bill Seawright the Inventions of the Year Award at the 17th International Exhibition of Inventions at Geneva.

It was also in this year that Bill's younger brother, Alex Seawright, joined the partnership. Alex introduced engineering services and expanded the retail products to include a much broader agricultural industry supply base.

In 1990, Innisfail Bearing Supplies became IBS Engineering Supplies to highlight the fact that hardware and engineering supplies were sold as well as bearings and seals.

IBS relocated to 163 Edith St, Innisfail in 1998 and later expanded to include Bill’s sons Damien and Adam Seawright.

It is this strong family commitment that has helped our company survive and prosper after enduring two cyclones and a flood. We lost $30,000 worth of stock during Cyclone Winifred in 1986 and $100,000 worth of stock during floods in 1999.

In 2006, Cyclone Larry caused irreparable structural damage, more than $136,000 worth of damage to equipment and machinery and more than $50,000 worth of stock was destroyed. We were forced to close for two weeks.

Despite suffering major physical damage and losing thousands of dollars worth of stock, we have overcome these obstacles to become the highly successful, innovative business we are today.

In August 2008, we relocated to our new site at 31-33 Palmerston Drive, Innisfail, a long-held dream for managing director Bill Seawright. This relocation has enabled IBS to double our floor size and increase our retail product range, as well as facilitating the development of the IBS Centre of Engineering Innovation.
