NDT&A
IBS NDT&A services allow for non-destructive tests to be performed on existing physical components and virtual models alike.
Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
FEA allows IBS engineers to examine and test models of parts and assemblies for virtual strength and reliability before parts are physically produced.
Models are created using 3D CAD design software and then transferred across to FEA software for testing.
The software can reveal if, or how, equipment might fail by applying appropriate loads and constraints to models that would be applied under normal circumstances.
Magnetic Particle Testing
Magnetic particle testing offers a means of testing ferrous metals for cracking that may not necessarily be spotted before failure occurs.
This form of testing enables the observation of defects that are not able to be seen with the naked eye.
An electric current is applied to the part undergoing testing. The electric current creates a magnetic field through the part which leaks around deformities in the material. Magnetic particles are then sprayed onto the part to allow the visualization of these deformities.
“We don’t have to break the equipment to see if it’s going to fail.
If it is going to fail, we can tell where and how and then work back
and adjust the design.”
Adam Seawright, Design & Project Engineer, IBS Engineering
How Can NDT&A Benefit You?
- No breaking of equipment
- Confirmation of stability & longevity
- Minimise component failures
- Analysis models kept on record
Assisting Industry
IBS’s non-destructive testing and analysis capabilities were demonstrated when Bundaberg Sugar requested assistance from IBS to ensure their lifting frames met Workplace Health and Safety Standards.
Under Workplace Health and Safety guidelines, lifting frames must have a visual indication of their maximum safe working load.
IBS used its FEA software to apply loads and constraints to 3D models of the testing frames for the purpose of determining the safe working load (SWL) with minimal disruption to the company’s operations.
Bundaberg Sugar’s lifting frames are now:
- Stamped
- Certified
- Stating the SWL
- Complying with WHS guidelines
All our analysis models are kept on record for future reference. In the event modifications are required, testing can be undertaken on the digital prototype before the manufacturing process begins.
